Career oriented courses give you the edge

Pick an add-on course carefully to match its suitability in today’s competitive world

A plain Bachelor’s degree will not fetch you a job. Today, when the economic slow down is leading to a mass layoffs, it is advisable to pursue a job-oriented and skill enhancement course. These courses add value to your degree and put you ahead of others in the queue.

Colleges offer a host of such courses that can leave you spoilt for choice. These courses are supposed to enhance your analytical power, add value to your academics, make you comfortable enough to compete and secure a satisfactory job without waiting for long.

Gargi college, Delhi, is known for its add-on-courses – ‘expanding horizons’ and ‘job oriented courses’ . The former has a few options like historical tourism, theatre workshop, and introduction to bio-informatics, professional ethics and environmental science. Among the career-oriented ones, the college has a range of options like banking and finance, advertising and marketing and related branches. The fee is Rs. 1,000 for the expanding horizons courses and Rs. 10,000 for the job-oriented ones.

These courses are not only meant for skill enhancement but they also create employment opportunities. Recently, one girl who had done a course in professional ethics from Gargi College got a job in a famous hospital in Delhi. Admission is not restricted to students from any particular university or state.

Maharaja Agrasen College, Delhi offers integrated and intensive knowledge through its English Language proficiency, DOEACC, WLC, TV anchoring, news reporting and cinematography courses. The fees for the three-month courses range from Rs. 2,450 to 15,000. They provide all opportunities to their students by way of giving them exposure in well equip labs, help them in securing internships with channels like Doordarshan. They arrange lectures by alumni also. The demand for the courses is growing manifold every year – undergraduates and also post-graduates want these.” Some students who did the TV anchoring course at the college, says, “Such courses do not take a toll on your regular programme and are very useful in the long run.”

Other reasons

Some indian colleges weight the pros and cons properly before introducing any course. Like Kamala Nehru College, Delhi focuses on programmes, which can instill good values in students rather than lead to a certain job. “There are several private academies which impart skill enhancement courses. Here, in the college, they believe in improving the standards of their degree courses and keeping add-on-courses as the catalyst, which help them make good citizens. They run programmes in gender sensitisation, art appreciation and consumer consciousness and environment.

Ramjas College, Delhi offers many such courses including peace and conflict resolution, human rights and forensic science. Maitreyi College, Delhi has a short-term certificate course in nano technology. Miranda House, Delhi has tourism, web designing, and operational research and office automation. Hindu College conducts acting skills and creative writing courses. Kalindi College, Delhi has three courses in photo journalism, video production and functional English while Venkateswara College, Delhi has four courses.

It is very important to carefully pick the course you wish to pursue to match its suitability in today’s competitive world.
