Do One-to-One Immersion language courses work?

A lot of people and especially student often wonder if one to one immersion language courses really work. This question is also often debated by academic staff around the world and it seems that it is difficult to give a straight answer as results may depend.

But it depends on what then? The factors that will be involved will be first of all the language school you would be using and then obviously the teachers and the teaching methods they use. It is as important though to know what the language level of the student is and what their goals are. As learning a language depends a lot also on the student and its motivation, there is never really a guarantee of complete success.

Usually One-to-One immersion courses are based on around twenty hours a week, but most language schools provide immersion courses at approximatively thirty hours a week. The success and the length of the course will clearly depend on the language level of the student, as if he or she has a fairly low level, a thirty hours a week immersion course will be somehow questionable. The success of such a long immersion course for a beginner student is going to depend a lot on their ability to stay focused during the whole course, which is highly improbable and might be on the contrary completely counter-productive. As a result, it would be much better to involve the student in a 15 hour semi-immersion course that would suit them best and give a more efficient basis.

On the opposite, the sales department of some language schools might see this in a completely different way and would much prefer to sell a thirty hours a week immersion course rather than a fifteen hours a week course. This is going to depend on the way the school works.
If a low level student wants to follow Spanish language courses for medium level students, it is the role of the school to make them understand that a beginner course will be more appropriate.

Whether you want to learn Spanish in London and follow Spanish lessons in London or anywhere else, you will have to pick carefully the school you want to go to.
In the end, whatever the language you want to learn or improve your skills on, the feedback from the student will be very important for the school so they should try to get you the most suited method.
