Gum Disease Causes Low Birth Rate in Infants

We all know how dangerous gum disease it for our health. However, can you imagine how dangerous it would be for women who are with child?  Having children is not an easy thing to do.  Therefore, to have this coupled with the fact that you have gum disease that can threaten the life of your child would be too much to bear.  Unfortunately, this is a true situation that happens to most mothers in the U.S.

There are many complications that can happen to the baby if you have gum problems while you are pregnant. One of these complications is the weight loss for the baby.  You may end up having a malnourished baby that you would have a hard time taking care of.

How does a gum problem affect your child’s health?

  • If you have gum problems, it would affect the baby in such a way that it can cause infection in your body that can affect the weight of the baby.  This is because if you have an infection, the nutrients in your body are absorbed by the bacteria that cause the infection.  If this happens, the baby nutrition will be compromised and his weight will be affected.
  • Aside from this, the baby may have complications when he or she is born because he or she may be affected by the bacteria inside your body.  Some of the ill effects for the baby would be as follows.

Severe Malnutrition

  • Because of the depleted nutrients, he may have a weak immune system that will make him susceptible to conditions of all kinds.  If this happens, you would have to spend a lot of money just to get into the hospital for long periods of time.

Weak Immune System

  • As mentioned earlier, severe malnutrition can lead to having a weak immune system.  Aside from being susceptible to many diseases, the patient will also lose his appetite and therefore would not be able to replenish the nutrients that he needs to survive.  If this happens, he would grow weak and eventually die.
  • These are just some of the negative effects of having gum problems while you are pregnant.  If you want to prevent this from happening, you have to take steps to ensure that you do not get any gum problems while you are carrying your baby.

Pregnancy Dental Health Tips

You have to brush your teeth as regularly as you can.  If you do not do this, it will make your teeth weak and cause it to fall out.  In addition to this, the bacteria in your mouth will cause infection that may affect the baby.

Have regular visits to the dentist.

  • Paying a regular visit to your dentist will help you determine the right kind of medication that you should take while you’re pregnant.  Natal care is important while pregnant.  This being said, taking care of your teeth while pregnant is as important.

Change your diet

  • You should make it a point to keep the right kind of food while you’re pregnant.  It will help the baby fight off the bacteria that may cause infection.

These are just some of the important steps that you can do to keep your dental health while pregnant.
